I have a couple special tools (wrenches) that I'm trying to find out what kind of airplane they may have been used on, and I figured if I can't get any answers here, I might as well give up trying. I found them in an old hangar that was to be torn down at the Worland Wyoming airport a few years ago. They obviously had been sitting in there for many years before I came upon them. The first tool is a spanner type wrench about 13" in total length. The span's inner diameter measures 4 and 3/4 inches with two cogs on opposite ends. The handle is stamped,"TAIL WHEEL SHOCK PACKING NUT." "Tool NO. 4048398," is also stamped on the handle. I'm assuming perhaps it was built for either a DC-3 or a B-17, but that's just my guess. The second tool is a box-end wrench that measures 19" in total length. It's outer diameter measures 5 and 1/2 inches with eight cogs around the diameter. The handle is stamped, "Wright 82889" along with, "ARMSTRONG....MADE IN USA." I'm guessing some type of Wright engine tool but that is all I can figure out. I would post a picture of them but I'm a complete individual of questionable judgement when it comes to computer technology. Any help would be greatly appreciated. |

The Wright wrench is a Prop Thrust Bearing Lug Nut Wrench for R-1820. The packing wrench part number does not come up as a B-17 part number (usually preceded by an "F") or as a C-47 tool (usually preceded by "K"). It does look similar to Douglas part numbers however. |

Thanks for the information. In light of what you posted, I wonder if the packing wrench was in fact made for the DC-3 as Frontier Airlines served the Worland airport back in the day with DC-3's until they were replaced by Convairs. I suppose it's possible the tools were forgotten and left behind when they were phased out. Would the B-18 Bolo and the DC-3 use the same part number packing wrench? |
