Does anyone have a good source for new, "antique looking" aircraft wire? The wiring insulation from the '30s and '40s didn't look much like today's modern wire.

I believe Mr. Ramey did all the repop wiring for FHC's UPPUA P-51, he'd be the first source I'd chat with-

Dan,

If the wiring is for a flyer and not a static, you'll want the reliability of modern aircraft wiring. What I did was buy spools of various gauge modern aircraft wiring and sent them to http://www.narragansettreproductions.com/

They will cloth cover the wiring in any color pattern needed and in the case of the L-5 they covered and varnished the wiring in a cream color as below,

They did a great job and I'd recommend them for any project.

Antique Electronic Supply in Tempe AZ has a modern wire with a fabric cosmetic sleeve. The problem is a for a given gauge wire it looks bigger. I got 18 gauge standed wire with a white sleeve. I wish I had varnished the wire for a better look.

They will send you samples. I bought a 1000' spool for about $100.
