A place where restoration project-type threads can go to avoid falling off the main page in the WIX hangar. Feel free to start threads on Restoration projects and/or warbird maintenance here. Named in memoriam for Gary Austin, a good friend of the site and known as RetroAviation here. He will be sorely missed.

You bet we're interested!!!!!!! My only regret is that I can't be there to help with the job.

Well OK, now I went and did it. I'll plan on updating this thread with I hope to be some new and interesting stuff this year. Too bad you guys aren't up this way as it's going to be a very busy maint season for us. Our maint planning meeting will be in the next week or two to plan the schedule of which airplane rolls in to the maint hangar first.
Thanks for the interest!

Dave, You mean you can't turn this into a TLC reality show? Cameras, action! We could watch the weekly episodes. You'd have to figure out how to be a disfunctional family though....

I'm all for it :)

I think I could turn up the dysfunctional part. :D Just a hint at what we've added to the inspection, quite a bit of NDT work. I'm planning on uploading some pictures of the Sabre's bone structure ( X-ray ).

I'm just catching up to this thread, outstanding!

Do you do a HSI every year or is dictated in your maintenance program?

Nothing else to do in WI in the winter if you're not into snowmobiling or ice fishing!!! Look forward to seeing great stuff being done!!!!! Keep up the good work. Fight the good fight!

Hi guys,
I learned from the mechanic who took care of our Sabre for 10 years before we bought it that the hot section needs to be looked at just about every 50 hours. He was right on the money from what I've been seeing the last couple of years we've been doing the inspections. It's a given the exhaust cone will be cracked and a combustion liner or two in need of repair. Certainly some of this is a result of repairing a previous repair year after year. This year we will be installing one of our spare engines and doing the hot section inspection on the removed engine later on the in the year. The plan is to swap engines out each year and shorten our down time. The parts in need of repair have to be sent out and can take a while to get back. Now that we have 2 spare engines, we hope to be in good shape for a while. The NDT process is going to be done in the first part of November as we want to get an early start if we find anything that needs an extensive repair. Hopefully not, but we sure will feel better having a more detailed look at the structure of the wing.
I hope I answered the question about the HSI without putting anyone to sleep.

Thanks Dave - great info!

BTW, how many hours do you guys average per year?

Fri Oct 16, 2009 9:16 pm

About 40-50 hours per year on the Sabre. With 7 more airplanes to keep active, that's a good amount of flying time on it for the year.

Just curious as to whether I should resurect this thread? Is there still interest in seeing and hearing about on going maintenance? It's been very easy to post this information on our FB site, but would like to contribute again to WIX if the interest is there.
Thanks,
David
