A place where restoration project-type threads can go to avoid falling off the main page in the WIX hangar. Feel free to start threads on Restoration projects and/or warbird maintenance here. Named in memoriam for Gary Austin, a good friend of the site and known as RetroAviation here. He will be sorely missed.

I had a few more pics of some of the stuff these guys did for me!
This is Brads handy work. As before, we had to make an adapter plate for the new induction trunk. We can't just go and make 4 of them because each is slightly different in hole locations. Brad made this one for the #2 engine and then made a tool out of Plexy, to make it easier for the other two to be fabricated.
By the way, before you ask, that's not rust, it's alodine treatment that discolors the metal. It's for corrosion resistence!
While Brad was doing that and then everyone was working on getting the #1 engine cowling off, Mark was in the shop working on the Dynafocal "LORD" mounts. He got all 6 taken apart, I inspected them and he got them all put together with new rubber cores and new rubber snubbers. This is his second go at it, so it went pretty well. The first ones he did were for the #3 engine with some help from John Meyer, so he learned alot.
Not shown was Chris getting the oil tank rinsed and flushed out. It's a filthy job and I appauld him for taking it on. He said, "if Shorty can do it, so can I"
Thanks again everyone!!

Alan, those aren't -57s. One is a -23 and the other a -59.

So you hung up the Welsh flag??
Inspiring work on this project. I´m in awe!

Yes they are a -23 and a -59. They are in perfect condition and would be a great addition to any museum. PM me with an offer and lets get them out of this dusty warehouse!

It's been kinda slow for a couple of weeks! I was gone for a week for my oldest sons wedding. This week we had the P-82 leaving one day and the mauler stuff leaving after an overnite windstorm blew the center section over. Just had another setback on the engine run up at Rays??
Now scheduled to go to Idaho April 13th.

Are they in running or overhaulable condition?
Tue Apr 07, 2009 10:07 pm
Well, quite honestly, they are surely overhaulable, but to my knowledge they are in rebuilt condition. Not sure when and I'm quite sure I wouldn't put them on anything and try to fly it!!!
hope that is some help!!!

Thanks. I know some of the folks who are working on "Doc". They need engines. (FWIW the lower spar cap has been fabricated, installation is next.)

I'll have plenty of engines, once I have four running on FIFI. Tell them to be patient and save here $$$$.

Heh. Patience and saving up $$$$ are pretty much a given in this racket. (Like we have alternatives?)
Still, Tony's been working on Doc since 1987. He's now in his 70's, and that old clock keeps ticking...

It's finally time!! I will be on my way to Ray Anderson's on Tuesday after an overnite in Seattle to check out T Square 54 at Boeing!! Very excited about this trip and expecting nothing but the best from the new engine.
