The Jesus Nut gets its name from the fact that if you lose it, the next person you will meet will be Jesus.

Not all choppers have them. Depends on the Rotor System. Mostly found on Bells with a 2 bladed teetering system.

Great photo set. I love seeing how other types are maintained. May I be a little cheeky and ask for a "master class" on how those quick release fittings on the flying controls work? I have never seen that type of fitting before.

Where do I start? Wow!!! I'll go back to the 4 bolts first. I've included 2 pictures showing both ends of the fittings as well as the shouldered bolt. For a 1950's airplane, it has to line up just right or it will not go together.

The flight controls are quick disconnect. After removing the safetywire you simply flip open the connection and twist the end with the "T" sideways to disconect. I hope that is a good explanation.

Here's a couple of photos of the pilots cramped office. If you don't duck your head when closing the canopy, you're going to get it knocked pretty hard.

Getting back to the cables, I forgot to mention that one side goes together easy and then the other side you have to keep your fingers out of the way as they may get pinched when you close the handle. That puts the tension back into the cables when they are all hooked up.
Rob,I'll see if I can find some information for you on the fuselage stand. Give me a couple of days to get back to you.

Paul, How did your annual go and are you back flying? We got our post maint flight on the T2 Buckeye today. All went well thankfully.

David,

The annual went well, still in the shop, been done for three weeks--waiting for the fuel nozzles to be sent back from cleaning/inspection guy in Sacramento :x . New fuselage fuel tank, new nose tire from Dixie and they cleared a few nitpicky squawks. Hopefully be flying soon.

Well today we removed the canopy and the ejection seat to get ready for the cockpit inspection then got started on the engine hot section inspection. The exhaust cone has some cracks in it and will have to be sent out for repair. I'll be crating that this week and get it out to the repair shop ASAP. Then we inspected the turbine wheel and found it to be OK. We then pulled a couple of the combustion cans to inspect them for cracks etc. The fuel nozzles looked very good. I was actually expecting something more like T33 drivers nozzles. Paul, looking at our nozzles makes me wonder if the 100 LL mix isn't too bad after all. We did have a little lead on the T-wheel, but not bad. That's about as far as we got today. We'll be back at it on Monday.

And here's a view looking at the turbine stator after combustion and directing the exhaust gas to the turbine wheel. Gets a little toasty in this area.

Great stuff David...yah for the time being I'm going to start mixing a little 100LL and see if I have better luck. The shop cleaning my nozzles had a he11uva time getting a couple of them clean. Mark Sherman (owns a Canadian CF-104, and Lockheed T-2V Seastar) has developed a fuel additive he's dubbed "Atomix" that brings water vapor into the combustion process, thus eliminating fuel nozzle coking. A byproduct of that has been an 8% increase in fuel efficiency in his Starfighter. He's already developed other successful fuel additives for the small engine industry so he knows what he's doing. I'll get you the info if you're interested. What percentage 100LL did you guys settle on?

I'd like to have the information on that product. We do have some concern of the lead build up and the possibility of getting the turbine out of balance. I think we run about 10% or so of 100LL mix. We were running more when we first started operating the Sabre, but have cut back a bit. Tailpipe and nozzles look good so far so we'll press on until we find something better. On another subject, have you found any other T33 guys interested in the nose tire deal? I haven't had much luck with the Sabre guys yet.

Just one other T-33 guy interested in the new tires. Most still buy from Dixie Air Parts. I'll get you the info on the fuel additive Atomix as soon as Mark sends me more details.
