What the heck is this thing?

Thu Jun 12, 2008 8:13 pm

50 pound wing or flap looking thing that is 120 inches long, 18 inches wide and 3 inches thick. It has nicely rounded wooden ends and two steel attachment points. each has two holes. There are no places for this wing shaped thing to swivel like an aileron. The skin is aluminum and has lots of round head rivets in it. It is painted a flat blueish grey color. The pieces have a wide, multi-layer rubber strap around the center. the strap is bolted together at the trailing edge of the wing shape.

It is definitely a flap piece. The attach points are the hinge horns. The hinge point would be located at the now chopped off end of those horns. Dunno what it's off of, but I would suspect it to be from a trainer or civilian type, not a combat aircraft.

flap piece

The hinge horns are not chopped off. they were built that way and have grey paint on the edges. Would a flap weigh 40-50 pounds? even for a big plane? my other flaps are flimsy aluminum structure. Also most flaps I have seen are not symetrical like these are. Except for the horns, you could flip this over and have the same look.

Dive flap for a BT-13/Val replica? Helicopter stabilizer?

I'm thinking of an elevator 'cause it has airfoil shaped caps at the end, and maybe those are balance weights.

Its the wing section from a DC-3/C-47 snow ski.
Its bolted to the back of the ski using the 2 attach points and is shown upside down in the photo.

sold them

The wing things were for a C-47 and deflect snow I am told.
I sold them.
thanks
