Need knowledge and a part to help save a F-86 please!

Sat Aug 09, 2008 7:03 pm

Tom P. here and I need a bit of help with a part and some knowledge.

First, is there anyone out there who has been a crew chief or work a lot with an F-86D model? I need help with the hoist attach points in the nose of the plane - specifically, even with the Tech Order I cannot find where the heck they are. Am I over looking a simple thing or what??

Second, the plane we are rescuing is missing the brace that locks the nose gear in the down position. I desperately need this piece so that once I get the plane off itss pole I can set it down on its own legs for the first time in more than 20 years. SO, does anyone out there know where I might be able to track this piece down? I believe the piece is the same between the "D" model we are getting and the other models out there. It does not need to be a tagged piece - this plane is not going to do any flying.

Thanks do much!

Tom,
I just got back in town. Do you still need some assistance or am I too late?

Tom,
Here's a picture out of the F86 F model manual for lifting the whole airplane. I'd guess that the D model will be similiar to this.

Hope this helps.

David,

Thanks much! I do have the Tech manual for the D model and the rear points look the same but the nose points are totally different. It looks like on the D model that the hoist points are forward of the cockpit - I'll have to find a scan of the manual and post it.

But I really do appreciate all the help!

Got the -D model 2-1 here and will post the page on how it looks as soon as I get it scanned in. The aft attach is forward of the fuselage split. The forward attach point attaches with the cover forward of the windscreen removed. A spreader bar is used at the aircraft attach point as well as several feet above. Applicable with the main fuselage with:
> main fuselage - no tail cone, no engine, no wings
> tail cone and engine - no wings
> wings - no tail cone or engine
> engine - no engine, no wings, and no tail cone
Otherwise a sling attaching to the wings and the aft attach point at the fuselage split.

Tom: For now you can whittle out a temp drag link from some steel bar stock or if you have a good welder available, then try some 1.5" or larger DOM tubing with at least .125" wall, weld in the appropriate plugs and use the biggest Heim joints that will fit.....Either will work for setting her down and should be fine for careful, low speed towing on good surfaces.

Your local 4x4/rock crawler shop should have the DOM and Heim joints in stock.
