B-25 winter project - turret

Tue Dec 18, 2007 9:24 pm

ok im gonna start it here and if needs to be moved or what please do so.
would anyone like me to do a thread of it from start to finsih, im sure its a stupid question but id thought id ask. we just got the martin 250 for our B-25 Pacific Prowler and since im the out of work full time A&P student i was asked to head up the project. if i wasnt trying to get out of there(after taking off 3 jugs and getting one new one back on)or i would have my camera with me now and able to post some pictures of us de-crating the big thing. so youll have to wait till tomorrow for that, but is anyone rerally interested in it?

Jon: I, too, am in favor of your posting pics.

It's not clear in your original post, but will you be restoring the Martin or simply installing what has already been restored? If it is the former, might I suggest a small modification.

The original wooden seat in the 250 is made of a notoriously thin chunk of wood. This probably worked back when your average gunner was around 150 lbs dripping wet, but if you plan to have folks from the 21st century actually use this turret, might I suggest using a thicker slab of wood to avoid warping to the seat over time. Remember that you will have electronic components attached underneath. Also, when the seat warps, sometimes the spring latches (attached to the seat) don't meet up with the holes in the frame like they should.

Much success on your project!

no i will be restoring the turret and then taken the bubble off the top of the plane and installing it. since the owner wants to keep the student seats we are taking off the armor plating, ammo boxes, seat and motors. itll be hand cranked but still be able to move around by those means. ok off to the hangar to work.. maybe i can take my laptop and upload pics from there?

Why is it always a rear lower jug? Least accessable? It's part of the harrassment policy!!!
