A B-1B bomber crashed in a remote area of southeastern Montana on Monday, but its four crew members survived after ejecting from the South Dakota-based aircraft, Air Force officials said.

Two pilots and two weapons system officers ejected before the bomber crashed about 9:30 a.m. near Broadus, Mont., said Col. Kevin Kennedy, commander of the 28th Bomb Wing. He said they were taken by ambulance and air to two South Dakota hospitals, but none of them suffered life-threatening injuries.

Aerial photos of the crash show a massive charred area of prairie land void of recognizable aircraft parts.

"No one likes to lose an aircraft. It's bittersweet that we did," Kennedy said during a news conference Monday afternoon. "Luckily, all four air crew are safely recovered."

Thank God they got out.

Thank God that wasn't downtown Broadus.. That's some smudge on the landscape. The crew were very lucky to walk away.

I always wondered what would have happened if they had used the capsule setup like we had in F-111's.

Did not work at all when I tried to link yahoo pics, so I found one that would work. Looks the same to me, how many giant scorch marks with the same trail patterns are you going to find out in the middle of the prairie ?

There's a good chance there'd be more fatalities due to accidents in the B-1 fleet.

A good man lost his life in B-1A #2 when it crashed because you can't just simply scale up the capsule design. Rockwell had been very reluctant to put #2 back into the air for the B-1B program for this exact reason, but they needed the airframes to fit the time schedule. Beside not being very similar to #3 and #4 structurally, the capsule was something that was a major concern because of the multiple failures of it during testing that had resulted in B-1A #3 and #4 being equipped with the ACES II ejection seats that are now installed in every B-1B.
