While I can't afford to buy anyone a house, I participated in a Wounded Warrior event at a local shooting range. We sold opportunities to fire all manner of guns (including my M2HB, .44 magnum revolver and M14 rifle), then donated the portion of the proceeds in excess of the ammunition cost to the Wounded Warriors. In fact, most of our group, myself included, donated the cost of the ammunition as well.
I think we ended up donating about $2,000 to the Wounded Warriors. We had fun shooting, taught some less experienced folks a little bit about the shooting sports, paid the range fee and had a (non-alcoholic) tailgate party.
It was a lot of fun, and your imagination is the limit when it comes to charitable hobby events like this.
