Warbird Information Exchange

Was it where the Fleet Admiral broke all protocol and had his armada 'light up the sky' in order for the returning aircraft to be able to find their way back?

Thanks.., i remember reading it somewhere., but i can not find it.., always thought it must have been quite a beautiful site to those poor pilots!!!!!

Don't remember the battle (Marianas?) but it was an american admiral (Spruance?) not a brit.
