On Saturday, Feb. 21, at 8:00 p.m. (check local listings), HBO will air "Taking Chance," a movie starring Kevin Bacon, based on a story from the anthology, Operation Homecoming: Iraq, Afghanistan, and the Home Front, in the Words of U.S. Troops and their Families. The anthology, and subsequent Emmy and Academy Award-nominated documentary entitled, Operation Homecoming: Writing the Wartime Experience, was created by the National Endowment for the Arts and made possible by support from Boeing.

The HBO film is based on the story by Lt. Col. Mike Strobl, a Marine who volunteers to escort the remains of 19-year old PFC Chance Phelps, killed in Iraq, to his family in a small Wyoming town.

Looks like an interesting film. Probably NOT an easy one to watch, bet perhaps a necessary one to watch. I lost a cousin to Afghanistan, the first casualty there. But it is still a bit of a disconnect, since I had never even met him, just his mother years ago. This film looks like a bit of closure, a catharsis of guilt or duty...I don't know, kind of hard to put it into words.

I would really have to see the film to make a decision on it. I really don't trust Hollywood!!! This is a sensitive, personal thing to a lot of people. Many have gone through this, and many are afraid of going through this. I have a friend from school whose husband has been over there for the better part of six years, and the emotional toll is tremendous.
