the bronze star medal misnomer......... the most misrepresented medal in veteran obituaries. the bronze star..... my dad just died this past october. retired major MARTIN M. FRIEDMAN u.s. army ww2, 31st infantry "dixie" division. new guinea, morotai, mindanoa, as rifle co. commander I 155TH infantry. a bronze star recipient. dad was sharp as a tack to the end. it pissed him off royally that that veteran's obituaries had bronze stars misrepresented by mistake . i don't know the specifics, but the little bronze stars on ribbons represented landings or attacks. the bronze star medal was for bravery, period. it all has merit , misunderstanding & all , but what pissed off dad was it was perceived like it was like guys won bronze stars for multiple acts of bravery most. |

http://www.tioh.hqda.pentagon.mil/Award ... STAR1.html Quote: General George C. Marshall, in a memorandum to President Roosevelt dated February 3, 1944, wrote:
"The fact that the ground troops, Infantry in particular, lead miserable lives of extreme discomfort and are the ones who must close in personal combat with the enemy, makes the maintenance of their morale of great importance. The award of the Air Medal have had an adverse reaction on the ground troops, particularly the Infantry Riflemen who are now suffering the heaviest losses, air or ground, in the Army, and enduring the greatest hardships." The Air Medal had been adopted two years earlier to raise airmen’s morale. |

my dad's most cherished award was his "cib " combat infantry badge. he gave it to me. i wouldn't sell it for a million bucks, even though they sell on ebay for under 10 bucks...... so much for putting your keester on the line for your country. |
