One of the "perks" that my dad talked about was the Kubelwagen that he used in North Africa. He and the fellows in his maintenance unit recovered and repaired a couple of Kubels, one for his Lieutenant and one for my dad. He liked it better than a Jeep, and said if you happened to get stuck you and your buddies just picked it up out of the sand and went on. When the Division was being moved out of Africa he had to leave the Kubel there. Dad seldom had anything bad to say about anyone or anything, but leaving "his" VW in North Africa always pissed him off! 8)

I don't believe either of these are the one dad drove--he told me he used the scorched-earth policy when he was ordered to leave his in North Africa. He drove it out where no one would get hurt, pulled the pin on a grenade, and dropped it in the front seat. He once told me he felt kind of guilty destroying it because he had become quite attached to "his" Volkswagen, but that if he couldn't have it no one could. 8) Interestingly, he never got another Kubel the whole time he was in Italy.

It looks like someone set these two on fire, so maybe scorched-earth was widely practiced!
