Actually, Bill, the final documents have not been sign yet- they are still bickering over a few Russian occupied islands off Hokkiado... I'd thought they'd signed. So technically, due to paperwork, and failure to come to terms agreeable, the second world war is still going on. Just because the shooting stops does not mean the war is over. Just because most of the belligerants have called an end doesn't mean it is over. It ain't over till the papers are all signed and filed...

Government assistance for teachers is fine. But part of the problem is that colleges and universities first priority is no longer education, but PROFIT. They waste millions on football- and overcharge for everything to finance it. I could go on, but it annoys me...

And there is no more worthy occupation than protecting the Freedoms this country guarantees. You can be uneducated and free. But educated and not free? Rather be dumb and free.

I do agree with your last statement- the Veterans Benefits are worth it.

We need to build a fence around Washington DC, seal them off, and pipe in the news, etc. and form a new government to run this country properly... Let them think they are still in charge, and let us get on with living a normal life! I used to enjoy politics. I am so sick of it after the past 16 years, between Clinton and Bush, that if I didn't have to listen to one more idiot telling how great he'd be as president, I would be happy... Buncha frappin morons.

The US was actively engaged in seeking out and eliminating holdouts of both the Japanese Empire and Nazi Party for many years after the official end of hostilities (which, BTW, a declaration of conclusion of major combat operations was issued, which would be the equivalent in this case) and now we are in the stage (in Iraq and Afghanistan) of mop-up and counter insurgency operations, the same phase we were in at this period after the end of major operations in WWII and the same phase we were in after the cease-fire was signed in Korea.

So you're saying that there were operations comparable to Fallujah, Ramadi, Sadr City, etc. in post-1945 Germany & Japan, and post-1953 Korea? I don't know for sure either way, but I've never come across this. I'd like to read up on it, can you recommend some sources?

The last Japanese soldier to surrender in the Philippines did not surrender until the mid 1970s- almost 30 years after the end of the war! He refused to come out until his commander from WWII came out, and told him PERSONALLY that it was over! There may still be some out there- but they'd be in their early 80s at least...
