WW 2 anti ship mine washes ashore on east coast u.s.

Fri Jun 28, 2013 7:58 pm

a ww2 anti ship mine washed ashore on the east coast of the U.S. as of a few days ago. FORGOT WHERE, I THINK IT WAS IN NEW JERSEY, BUT CAN'T REMEMBER. might have been upstate from their. anyway, it was still live & to fragile to move according to the coast guard & bomb experts. I think it was an ocean bottom lying mine & not a floating 1, from the jist of the news story, as the freak & violent storm trends re: the weather lately was mentioned. it was detonated w/ 600 lbs of tnt on the beach. just goes to show the danger that still lurks in the ocean since the end of the war.

I think one of those washed up on Gilligan's Island once too. It had all those spikey detonators on the outside. If you find any photos of the east coast one, please post!

The sharks who were giving Nemo a tough time learned about those the hard way too.

They don't know whether it was a live mine or a training one, and didn't bother digging it out, so their are no pics, just video of the detonation.

Sounds like it never really came out of the water - just partially buried in the sand in 10-15 of water. Just wondering, if it was a mine and the expolosives were still viable - would it not have made a bigger "boom" - or maybe I am jaded by today's movie depictions of explosions
