Residents living near Boise's Gowen Field are hoping to ground the Air Forces plans to use the field as a training base for the F-35.
Currently the field is equipped with A-10 WARTHOGS and the neighbors don't want the as they voice it 'extreme noise' caused by the F-35.
A study by the Air Force found as many as 10,000 people near Boise Airport would hear loud and frequent jet noise if the maximum of 74 F-35's were assigned to Gowen Field. The Air Force said it's preferred location is Arizona but it is required by Federal regulations to complete an environmental impact process. The Air Force said it would take at least $167 Million in airfield construction to use the field in Boise.
Part of the problem is that residential areas have moved in around the airport over the decades since the field was built in the 1940's and was then far to the South of Boise.

Don't blame them. You wouldn't expect to hear airplanes near an airport.

Personally I think they should use an existing base rather than spending an additional $167 million on an already far over budget program.

The Air Guard is already located on Gowen Field and has been for decades, currently flying HAWGS, before that F-4's. It's like McConnell is, a dual user airfield, Southwest and Horizon on the North-ish side and the Air Guard/ UPS on the South-ish side.

GOOGLE EARTH it for a lookie loo @ Boise, ID. Gowen Field

Something weird is going on in the Air Force. They want to take the TX ANGs C-130s away and make the unit an MC-12 unit and the Tx unit would lose many jobs. They want to send the C-130s up to the Montana ANG at Great Falls and take away their F-15s. The Montana ANG would need to hire and train 100s of people and spend upwards of $150 million to train crews, and build new facilities. Why not give the MC-12s to Montana and not have to build new facilities?

MC-12's and Montana reclusives with a million rounds of ammo each, not a good mix!

Maybe they are planning on using them on the border with Mexico?

Interesting - I had heard that the 419th FS was going to return to Hill with the F-35. seems close for Gowen to have (get) them as well.
