A friend of mine flew the ones that sprayed the "weed" killer on the crops down in Central America. It had armor plating and self sealing fuel tanks, just like in the cool airplanes! He said there were a few times the armor was nice insurance to have. Apparently those folks didn't much care for crop dusters killing their crops.

Is it me, or are standards lowering? R/C airplanes given the euphemism UAV and cropdusters used as a substitute for A-10's.. What next? How about BD-5J replaces F-16?

The dad of a friend of mine, was killed flying one of those in Western Guatemala back in the 1980s.

Those airplanes have been used also in Colombia, and a couple I have seen, were armed with .30cal mgs. Later on, they flew with armed UH-1H escorts while spraying (in Guatemala, and I understand, also in Colombia).

..and Burma/Thailand in the "Golden Triangle:. A friend of mine flew them mainly at night. He carried a pistol for self defence in the event of an unscheduled landing [as he says to shoot himself!]
