I found about 100 old pictures of aircraft and barrack photos in a trash can. One of the pictures is of a crashed plane that I am unfamiliar with(assume Japanese). What is this plane? Any idea as to what carrier the pictures were taken on? I don't have a scanner, so I just held each picture and took a photo of each one.ImageImageImageImageImageImageImageImageImageImageImageImageImage

Looks like a Tupolev SB-2 to me.

I didn't expect it to be Russian. Thanks for the I.D. on the plane Ryan.

Ryan, you are correct.

First thing I thought when I saw the picture, was Russian, Tupolev something or another. :drink3: :drink3: :drink3:

The glazing on the nose is distinctive on this particular model.

Sad to see things like that put in the trash.

I'm curious about the squadron markings. I don't believe I've ever seen those before. Any ideas?

According to Bill C. Kilgrain's
COLOR SCHEMES and MARKINGS
U.S. NAVY AIRCRAFT
1911 - 1950

In January 1947 letters were assigned to Air Groups on carriers.
Where before USS Tarawa owned the T and it was applied to her aircraft, the T now belonged to CVG-1 on USS Tarawa but in the future could move with CVG-1 if it went to another carrier.

It looks like a 40 on the end of the flight deck and that would be CV-40, USS Tarawa.

Those pictures are history, and should be put in museum for the next generation to see what greatest generation accomplished.

Note the small photos. My dad or a friend in the Navy had a camera that took those, "..something like half a 35mm frame." I've seen a few photos of his from that era in that format.
