B-24, right? Did the wartime airplanes have what appears to be a plush seat and headrest or is there a chance this is a C-87/109 or Privateer? That book was first published in 1943 ...

Now I know why Gary cut those windows in the top of the greenhouse on '927--so the pilots could read without eye strain. And I thought it was to make them sweat on a sunny day.
