Post subject: | Project 914 Photo Archives |
'Project 914' began several years back as nothing more than a fancy way to say 'my photo collection'. Since then, it's grown into an actual project to gather as much imagery showing vintage aviation as possible, with the goal of presenting this imagery to as many people as possible via the internet. A website is planned, but is still a ways off. Until then, the posting of images on forums like this one and on photo-sharing sites (such as flickr.com) will have to suffice. Today the core of the Project 914 Archives remains my own personal photo collection. But also included are photos from the collections and family albums of a small number of fellow collectors and friends. Enjoy... Fade to Black... ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ I'll start off with a few shots of my favorite bird. I don't collect alotta photos of post-WWII stuff, but there are a few subjects I try to jump on, like aircraft from the local ANG outfit... F-94B 50-940, 136th FIS, 107th FIG, NY ANG, based at Niagara Falls. ![]() These next two shots show F-100Cs of the 136th TFS while temporarily attached to the 31st TFW at Tuy Hoa AB in South Vietnam during 1968-69. ![]() ![]() Here's a shot taken upon the return of 'Rocky's Raiders' to the USA in May of 1969. ![]() A couple shots of 136th Huns during earlier years... (If anyone has a nicer print of this first photo, I'd like to have a decent scan) ![]() ![]() I'm not sure exactly when this shot was taken, but both jets have the PUC marking below the aft end of the canopy, so this would have to be during or after the unit's time in Vietnam, I would think. ![]() All photos: Steve O. Last post for the moment... Here's some B-18s and B-23s from Geiger Field, Washington during 1941. Not sure what unit these are from... possibly the 19th BG, but I haven't researched it yet. ![]() ![]() ![]() All photos: Steve O. Reno collection More to come... Fade to Black... |

I have always thought your site was full of great photos Steve! Regarding the color P-40D you posted... This is a very specific request, but if anyone has the photo, it would be you! I'm looking for a B model at an angle similar to that color D photo, but coming more at you (but not dead on), with the starboard wing up slightly. Am I being too picky? ![]() |

Django, I'll see what I can come up with... Here's one for the Spitfire fans... a fairly common photo, but what the hey... Spitfire IXc MK210 was used for range extension testing at Wright Field. Extra fuel tanks were installed internally in the rear fuselage and leading edges of the wings... ![]() Steve O. Reno collection MK210 could also carry drop tanks under the wings. ![]() Image source: the web MK210 was later adorned with a nice piece of a... uh... artwork... ![]() Image source: the web Fade to Black... |

Nice shots. I love the early P-40 with the multi-color spinner... The B-23 in flight really looks great too. ![]() |

Great pictures!! I especially liked the P-40 factory shot. Was it taken in Buffalo and if so, do you have any more like them? Scott |

Glad you like, folks... Zane, that color shot is actually a restoration I did of a rather lousy print. So to hear someone say that it's 'stunning' gives me a bit of satisfaction... thanks much! Scott, that factory shot was indeed taken here in Buffalo. Unfortunately I don't have any other assembly photos like that one at present, although I do have a number of factory shots from other sources. I'll try to post some... Speaking of that factory shot, I was a little vague in my description. It shows P-40Ls and early P-40Ns. These early 'N' models were from the N-1 production block and retained the original canopy configuration. These ships also left the factory with only four guns installed, although I believe that six were often fitted in the field. Here's a P-40N-1 in operational service... this ship, serial number 42-104577, served with the 88th FS, 80th FG, Tenth AF in the CBI. It was involved in a taxiing accident on November 9th, 1943 at Lilabari Field in India. In December of 1945 it was handed over to the Chinese. ![]() Steve O. Reno collection Here's a pretty crapola photo showing a P-40N that's seen better days. This ship has the more familiar canopy usually associated with the 'N' model. I don't know offhand what unit this ship was with, and I haven't researched it yet, although I believe that it's a stateside training outfit... so if anyone recognizes the markings, please chime in. ![]() Steve O. Reno collection Last one for this post... I believe this is P-40N 44-7060. I've only begun to research this ship, and haven't gotten all that far yet. But I've determined that it was assigned to the 339th BU at Thomasville Field, GA and the 338th AAFBU at Page Field, FL. The nameplate says the pilot is Lt. J.H. Folsom... I wonder if that's the fella in the photo? ![]() Steve O. Reno collection More to come... Fade to Black... |

Not a whole lot, still looking though. Is this fairly close to what you mean by 'coming more at you'? ![]() Posted by connie1649 on flickr If I can't find a photo that's close to what you're looking for, I can maybe take some shots of a model... Fade to Black... |
