Testing Allisons The Ole Fashioned Way

Test cell at 13th AF depot at Oua Tom, NC for new overhauled Allisons and Merlins.

They still do it that way.

As for OSHA, they need to be restructured (a polite way of saying shut down)

That's the way we did it on P-3's and E-2C's but we stood on B4 stands locked down and with a little reverse added jump up and did our inspections :supz:

The mechanic at least appears to be wearing some form of ear covers. Otherwise, standing a few inches from those exhaust stacks would NOT be fun.

Looking at the reduction gearbox it looks like one off a P39. Or is it one used especially for testing?

Probably right.
Looks like a gearbox unit bolted onto the front end for running on the test cell.

Interesting observation, as well as the plumbing for what looks like fuel or coolant.

if you mean the next bay over, looks to me like a test rig with a radial mount, with a two-wheeled trailer nosed over behind it.

great shot, I'd love to hear what that sounded like!
