Have you heard about the new concept for air racing?

What could be improved on what they have now? Well, the site is a long ways away and can have weather that is too hot or too cold or even both almost at the same time. And there is more smoke in the casino hotels than an Aeroshell team act.

But also the races are a bit of the same old thing. It really is Strega outrunning and/or outlasting all those radial engine pretenders to the throne, as well as an occaisional weird painted Mustang, same as it was 10 years ago. Now, the original Tiger is behind the scene and a new young tiger is in the cockpit, but the excellent flying is the same. They tried having T-28 races, but even Nevadians have some minimum standards and so it didn't draw the crowds.

So now, how about a new concept?

Same race course and classes as before. The only difference is that the pilots who are Demoncrats( yes, there are a few) will fly the normal left hand pattern around the pylons, same as before.
The pilots who are Repulsicans(and will still admit it) will fly a new right hand pattern around the pylons, sort of like the P-38 is doing in that new air race shirt.

VIOLA, FULL CONTACT RACING!!
And that should put some spectator interest back in the sport.
Now there may be few problems. The turn right guys will outnumber the turn lefts. Also the FAA can be such a stick in the mud about new ideas and may have some silly objections. You'll need that new Geico insurance with the forgiveness clause.
But the crowd is going to love it, and it should draw from those who like to watch ice hockey or what they call ultimate fighting, the one with all the muscular tattooed bald guys now on tv.

And it could bring back lot's of repair work for underemployed warbird wrench guys.

Bill,

That would only be fun to watch, if those politicians in favor of gun control were of course not allowed to use them, while those who hold that gun control consists of two hands in a steady grip, are allowed to use them... And I'm NOT serious. None of the guys I have voted for would likely be contestants.

Easy , B-29, those radials are some of the best engines around, the best long range bomber engines around.

Ok some folks say a radial is more reliable than an inline, if both are run at moderate power.
But let's look at history, what device has been around more than half a century and emphasizes reliability, when power is not vital and weight is not even a factor?

Why a railroad engine, of course and they are in line or v design; no fat boy engines.

But engine apart, what do you think of the new race idea?
