OH BOY!!!! STALL TESTS!!! I loved doing deep stalls in big airplanes when @ BADWRENCH! MD-80's were like big 182's and 767-300's really moved the old horizon around-
Ain't she pretty?

So what happened to 'winglets'? As on the 737-800's? Or are these the new and improved 'winglet lite' on the 787?

Also, I remember the initial design had a vertical tail like a dolphin.., does anyone know why that did not work out?

Thanks!

It has winglets there are flatter than traditional ones. Boeing started the flattened winglets on the 777. Now the 747-8 will have the flattened ones as well. The 787-9 will have the more traditional wiglets. The initial artist rendition of the 87 was probably meant to confuse the competition?

Well, hats off to you guys in Seattle for getting it flying.

Personally I think it is no prettier than any of the other stovepipes that I eat stale pretzels in every month, but it has been a long time since commercial aviation was any kind of a beauty contest. I look forward to seeing those flappy wings go up and down beside me in future years.

I'm curious, do the newer arliners like the 787 use fly-by-wire technology, or are they required to retain mechanical flight controls?

Bob

Nice to have another Cajun onboard! Yes the 787 is fly by wire. The Inspector can tell you more since he is closer to the the project then I.

Actually, the airplane is more 'fly by light' and controls are 'point of use' applications, the only cables in the aircraft operate the toilet tank drain valves. Nose wheel steering is electric as are AC/Pressurization, engine start (' Harry, get the jumpers out of the tug willya?') and the wheel brakes. The hydraulic system is only used to retract and extend the landing gear and it operates @ 5000 PSI, the gear issue on Z2's first flight was a misaligned truck position sensor and it did it's job in preventing the gear from retracting as mis positioned gear can damage the airframe and possibly jam the gear, it was not an issue with the hydraulics. The only air taken from the engines is a small duct for cowl lip de-icing. The APU is auxilliary electrical power only, makes no air because there's no where to use it, the engine IDG's and the APU make around 750Kva which is one heck of a lot to make coffee and turn on ceiling lights! A great deal of routine electrrical things are being done with fiberoptics instead of traditional copper wire because the wire is heavier, more costly, makes more heat and, is slower than speed of light FO cable is, and if all you are doing is turning things on and off, light works as well as electrical impulses do plus you can send lots more info in a fiberoptic than you can a wire, just look @ what high speed cable and internet are.
Cabin altitide will be around 6500 feet and about 29% humidity so if you can drive to Denver, you can ride very comfortably in this airplane and you won't arrive all dried out and wrinkly from the higher, drier air we put up with now a days. :D
