Post subject:  NON WARBIRD- Commuter Plane down in Buffalo NY Area 2/13/09
A 75 passenger Bombardier Q-400 commuter for Continental just went down in Clarence Center, NY, in a residential area, suburb of Buffalo, NY, 5 miles from BUF. "Continental Connection" Continental 3407, flown by Colgan Air. Newark, NJ to Buffalo, NY. 48 pax, some on ground taken to hospital, fate of passengers(pax) unknown, but there are fatalities. Crash into 1 house, fire, etc...

Check usual news sources for details- CNN, Fox, etc.

Prayers offered, but does not look good...

Guess this makes the Hudson River crash look even more the shining example of rare 100% survival.

Latest reports say no survivors (44 pax & 4 crew) with injuries and possible fatalities on the ground. :cry:

Aircraft was a stretch Dash-8.

I just figured some of the aviation community here might care, as they did for the water landing. I have no problem with it being moved to the off topic page now- Just it probably it wouldn't be noticed quite as easily, as a lot of people don't check there first...

I'm glad someone is there to point out my ignorance for posting things which are directly occurring. Guess I'll just wait to post something if interest next time.

I have more to say, but I'll just keep it to myself, as I can make some very pointed comments.

Oh- and the civil authorities and newsfolk kept calling it a "Bom-ba-deer", which was a position on some warbirds, so I'll give it that tie in just for giggles. Could call it a togglier I guess.

Mod post: FWIW, the post will probably be moved when it drops off the front page.

Most people seem to prefer major news items to start here, as this is where most people look. As long as the occasional item, such as this, or the Australian bush fires post of a few days ago, don't overwhelm the front page, I can't see a problem.

Known facts;
1)It was below 10,000 ft so would have been going under 250 kts.
2)It was 7 miles from the airport, and the airspace requirements would have had it slowing down to 200kts max, unless directed otherwise by ATC or the STAR. They may have had reduced power settings.
3) THey were aware of the icing and responded to ATC.
4) It was gusty and pilot flying may or may not have been using the autpilot.
5) It only took out one house, as opposed to a row of houses.
6) the tail survived having been twisted off at impact.

THis is what is known based on the facts as reported by the press.

I'm shocked that it only hit one house, seems to me that is must have been coming down at a very steep angle. That neighborhood is relatively dense with homes about 20+/- feet away from each other.

It's one thing to see a crash on the news somehwere in the country but when it happens in your area it hits home a little more. I literally drove within 100' of the crash site late yesterday afternoon.

I just spent an hour listening to the ATC tapes.

It happened right at the outer maker. They reported ice, and after they were lost ATC began soliciting more icing reports. They were slogging along for quite awhile in the band where everyone was picking it up.
Just really sad and chilling. Approach tells another company dash-8 to prepare himself-and then tells him that 3407 went down. Asks him if he wants to continue the approach.
It's amazing the job the controllers were doing.
