This forum is for discussions pertaining to Air Racing and Aerobatics of NON-Warbird aircraft. In addition this is the place to discuss General Aviation aircraft topics and yes Michael, that includes flying Lawnmowers :)

Gotcha. Can you disclose what was found to be the problem?

Essentially, the glue joints in the wings had failed. They "looked" perfect, but when a positive control check was done with the ailerons, the butt ribs were simply sliding up and down on the spar, causing the upper and lower skins on the wing to flex. No telling what the other ribs, that we can't see, are doing. So the right thing to do (and the only thing to do) was to pull the plug on the project for now, until the wing is completely rebuilt.

Sorry to hear of your trouble with the airplane. There's always next year!

BTW...that west Texas grass sure looks nice and green...what did you paint it with?

Hey Gary, since you're not in the plane, why don't you take pictures! :)

Ref: fitting the other wing on your shoestring

Gary or gary, I have a very simple way to make the other wing fit on your aircraft.. it takes about two hours. It's most likely too late now though give me a call if you are interested and get this message. ........ Gene 910 214 9004

Thanks Gene, but frankly, we (especially me) weren't all that interested in putting Another Solution's wing on Time Bandit anyway. Just didn't seem right to me. :-)

Gary,
I have a Cassutt and decided to check on your racers progress from last spring. The pages were loading very slowly and my patients ran out by page 7, so I just skipped ahead to page 22. I was ready to publicly admit you were the real SUPERMAN when I saw the Shoestring almost done! As I scrolled back I started to feel better about my only human abilities.

My Cassutt has 4 hours TT and when I purchased it and brought it home, I found a bad glue joint on one of the top wing skins. To be confident and as safe as reasonable I want to replace both top skins. Many people have suggested ways to remove the skins, none of which have actually done so.
As you are still way up there on my list of almost SUPERMAN type airplane rebuilders I wanted to ask you for your suggestions or someone you would recommend talking to about this? I am concerened that cutting the skin between the ribs and belt sanding the old skin down to the cap strip and spar might damage the wood cells and reduce joint strength.

I saw on page 8 that you had an interest in pictures of a yellow psycodelic painted Cassutt. You may or may not have the Dec '69 Air Progress with article on same. Let me know the address and I will send it if you want.

I had a friend who reskinned a Falco, another wood skinned bird.

He tacked guides to the top surface of the wings, set his plunge router depth at the skin thickness, and used his router to shave the skin down to the ribs along the joint lines. It worked surprisingly well.

I was always taught that you don't want to sand where there will be a glue joint because the pores of the wood get clogged with dust and prevent glue from properly bonding. You can cut the skin away between the ribs as you describe and then peel the skin off of the ribs and scrape away the glue residue with a chisel or spokeshave.

hope you got lotsa fotos of the if1 action and have a rundown on the not finishing/running of 44 judy and outrageous

Judy was DQ'd for the event and I am not sure about Outrageous. I know he was DQ'd from a heat for low flying, but I saw him racing after that, so maybe it was a mechanical DNF? He absolutely smoked the field in the silver heat coming from near dead last to win.

Outrageous started at the back of Heat 2B due to a low flying penalty in Heat 1A, he had about a 30 mph advantage over the field. He pulled out during the Gold final due to a rough engine.

So, since Gary's airplanes did not make it to Reno is there some interest in other IF1 action and aircraft at Reno? If so maybe I'll start a thread...
