I just blew coffe out my nose-

Fri Jun 21, 2013 10:41 am

I've got the local TV morning news on and they just did a report concerning an 'incursion' between a DELTA whale on a missed approach to JFK and a DELTA Connection departing La Guardia resulting in a 1400 ft separation
What caused my OOPSIE was a play back of the tower quizzing the 747 and the Captain confirming that they 'had' the other aircraft on the 'fish finder' now a new reference for TCAS???

They are commonly referred to as fish finders by flight crews and have been for at least twenty years.

^That's funny I don't care who you are.

Wasn't there something in the airline industry a while back talking with some disfavor on referring to the TCAS as a "fish finder"? I seem to remember some rather uptight folks saying the nickname did not convey the proper amount of significance the device deserved.

Then again, it may have just been something I heard at work from some crew passing by. Dealer's choice.

I don't think so,
TCAS at the airlines started in the early 90's and my fingers and toes show twenty years.

Uhh, not quite. TCAS II (v6) was fully deployed in 1993 per the FAA mandate but the implementation of TCAS II in the USA and most of the world began in 1986 following the Cerritos collision with both TCAS I (which had been in development since 1978) and early versions of TCAS II.
