One of the many things that may killl you is modfying an aircraft. Even when you know what you are doing there may be unintended consequences/surprises lurking.

Thing is, this has been reported on unmodified aircraft. There is something more going on than modification. There is something with the way the ailerons are balanced that is leading to this being possible.

Seems that it is damped well enough to not go divergent. My first response would be to slow down!

I wonder if they were close to max speed at all?

Wally, I'm aware that the post says for API, but I've found other mentions that they've had it reported on aircraft after the winglets were removed and on aircraft with the other style of winglets (can't remember the manufacturer now). I suspect that there is something in how the ailerons are being balanced that is making this possible and is why API is requiring a change in how the ailerons are balanced to fix the problem. I suspect we'll see a wider bulletin in the near future.

It is still only the API winglet aircraft that are affected.
No other winglet or basic 800 aircraft have had this type of problem, contrary to what others may be saying here or there.
