air france brazil to paris disappearance disaster

i've been following the disappearance disaster of the air france airbus flight from brazil to paris. i watched nbc news tonight & it's report stated that many commercial flights have no in flight radar coverage / monitoring over vast expanses of oceans. i find that crazy & shocking with all the satellite monitoring technology we have today. you'd think any flight would be covered, after all.... 10's of thousands of pieces of space junk are watched 24 / 7!!!
