? On Importing Plane to Mexico

Wed Mar 26, 2008 11:34 am

Some years ago I had a T-34 for sale. A man called, we went through negotiations, he came up to the shop where the plane was getting its annual. We agreed on a fair price, even had it in writing. Then he came up with something I'd never heard of. He claimed any plane being imported to Mexico was required to have a Mexican a&p come inspect it before bringing it down there. This sounds like baloney to me. Does anyone really know for sure? Was he looking for some type of under the table payoff? He did not directly ask me for any money, we had already agreed on the price, but it seemed to me he was stalling. In retrospect, I think he was not really a buyer, rather some kind of agent/broker hoping to sell it to a 3rd party. The name he used was Juan Andenege. I got tired of the bs and delays and sold it to a local pilot.

We import and export quite a few airplanes to Mexico. I can't say that I have ever seen a requirement for a Mexican A&P inspection.

However, I do know that in the last couple of years any Mexican registered airplane must get permission to have maintenance done on thier aircraft, outside of Mexico, from the Mexican DGAC before they leave.

So there could be some new kind of rule in place.

not that i have an answer to that, but i would figure that since its an American aircraft it would follow under the FAA standards not Mexican.

It might be the same, or similar to, importing an aircraft into the US. When coming this way, you must prove compliance with all Us Reg's, Ad's and such before they will register it here. As I remember it, with LSFM's Thunderbird they had to prove it was actually built in the US before the Fed's would allow it back in this country. Imagine that, a B-17 not built here.

I do know coming this way it is next to impossible to change an aircrafts status, as if its experimental in Mexico it will stay that way even if its a certified airplane was when it went to Mexico and there are hundreds of them flying in standard catagory they will stay that way without thousands of dollars woth of paperwork. This is true of non-US built planes, not sure if it applies to US built.
