I just purchased my first George Cearley Jr. book. This one is on Capital Airlines (what else?) and I spotted a pic of DC-3 N88835 (the one whose crash I've been researching) in the book. Does anyone have an e-mail address, or can they confirm that the snail mail addy is still good (I have a P.O. Box in Dallas listed in the book). PM me if you have info. Apparently, Cearley has done many books along these lines. This one is excellent: Lots of great pictures and great information. You can tell Cearley is passionate about aviation and is writing with the aviation buff in mind based on the extensive detail. |

I don't think George is plugged in to the digital world, but that PO Box address is still good; I know of a guy who mailed him a request letter a year or so ago and George replied, on paper, handwritten. I haven't seen George in 25+ years since '86-87 when I worked for a Cessna pilot shop in Dallas and we had his collection on the shelves; we'd see him several times a month when he'd bring new books in to restock and just hang out. I think his stuff is out of print since the late 80s or early 90s, so when the occasional book pops up on Amazon or eBay it commands a premium. His home garage was like an airline museum, some really cool collectible stuff in there. He's a walking airline history encyclopedia. |

Thank you for the info on the P.O. Box. I'll drop him a letter. Agreed on the Cearley books commanding a premium. It took me about three tries on eBay to secure the Capital Airlines book without spending a small fortune on it. Definitely well worth the cost, though. Apparently, he is working on a new book about Braniff Airlines. |

The P.O. Box still works! Unfortunately, my letter was misplaced in another P.O. Box and George did not get the letter until now. He called me on the phone this evening and we spoke for a bit. George truly is a gentleman and a scholar. What he was able to recall off the top of his head from a book that he wrote 25 years ago was astounding. I'm sure he's forgotten more about aviation than many of us will ever learn. |
