It's been pretty rough  the last few days... I have been working some with an airline FO to give him a tailwheel endorsement. He's doing quite well and it's been a lot of fun. The field was just perfect yesterday, so I took the Cub out for a bit of a photo shoot. Here is one of the photos.

Easy there! He's actually pretty decent. I was nervous at first about it, and heard some similar comments, but this one has gone really well. He likes warbirds, too!
I'd say he got it all together today, I'm just hoping for some crosswinds and good weather so I can go to a nearby airport for the last test - crosswinds. He's had a good and humble attitude all the way through, and says that he's noticed that the best captains he's flown with are guys who go out on their days off and fly little planes.

I enjoy doing tailwheel training with airline pilots. If they are not used to flying G/A aircraft the first few landings result in a three step flair:

1.) Not yet....
2.) Not yet....
3.) O.K....... FLAIR!!

How true it is. For the first 10 years of my "major" airline career, I had to take a break from light airplanes. When I finally "checked out" again it was in a J3. The checkout consisted largely of my friend Paul pointing at the ground and saying, "lower!" We laugh about it to this day. He though I'd have forgotten how to use my feet, but they were fine. It was the flare height that baffled me as the eye height on touchdown in the DC-10 I was flying at the time might have well as been cruising altitude in a Cub.

For various reasons (not the least of which is the humor created as I struggled to find the ground in that Cub,) that "reunion" with light airplanes and tailwheels is among my favorite aviation memories.
