Warbird Information Exchange

I'm looking to see if anyone out there can shed some light on these two photos.
I've had them for about 15 years. They were on glass negatives and from "Underwood and Underwood News Photos". Caption reads only that these pics were the scoop of the year when an early 1900's aircraft crashed into the sea and the pilot rescued. Amazing they were able to catch the crash on film, but I'm looking for details on the pilot and plane, which looks like a Curtiss Pusher, which puts the photo at least past about 1910.

Wikipedia is of course wrong about Robinson being the first to do a loop, which was Nesterov in Russia.
