Hi to the group, I've been warmed by the discussion about glossy glass finishes on vintage airplanes: I completely agree to a nicely done, semigloss butyrate dope style finish where one still sees the tapes and waves of the fabric. This is what I want to do on our Waco style Hatz I am building with my son. We both have about the same taste concerning design features(i'm very lucky), however, when we discuss the paint scheme, we have very different opinions: Wheras I stricly want to use 1930's style colors, my son Sam fell in love with the purple/light blue and silver of Rare Aircraft's QCF restorations. I must say, I like them too, they are beautiful and perfectly done, however, I doubt that in the 1930's any metallic color paints like the purple were available. Also, in my opinion, the silver on the wings is too glossy. I would appreciate receiving some thoughts from you experts. You see, we cannot afford a real vintage airplane, so we have to build a smaller biplane with the looks of a real one... Cheers Hans, Sitzerland |

The original silver on Wacos was in fact very flat. Not shiney at all. The closest Waco came to metal flake was the Gunmetal Grey that they used as a "standard" color from 1936-1939. |
