Wonder what the story is? Where, when?
One of the women is Katherine Cheung, well known 1930s aviatrix, who pased away in 2005-

I believe the plane once belonged to French WWI pilot Charles Nungesser who vanished in 1927 trying to fly the Atlantic just before Lindbergh. Thats his symbol on the side of the aircraft...

It is Nungesser's plane, but the upper photo seems to have been taken well after his death, so what's the story on it??

There was a story on the Planes of Fame collection in Air & Space a month or so ago and how they got this aircraft. It did belong to Nungesser and he brought it to the states. I'll have to did up the article to find out the whole story on how it ended up at PoF...
