So when was the last 500 year flood event? 490 years ago????

Well I'm 43 and so far, I've lived through three 100 year events and one 500 year event. But then there's the joke. The "chance clock" gets reset every year. we have a 1 in 500 chance of a 500 year event again this year, and the next, and the next, and so on. The fuzzy math comes in when they (Corps of Eng.) tries to figure out what level should determine a 500 year event.

Having gone thru the design work for beefing up our levees and floodwall for the water treatment plant not far upstream from the airport, What once was a 500 year design (in 1955) was a 57 year flood design in '94. What saved our butt with the '93 flooding was the failure of levees elsewhere chopping the top off of the project flood peak though we still ended up as an island amidst the flood waters. We finished the work by the time of the '97 flood and we looked good with that one.

Al - any idea how many aircraft were totalled/lost with the '93 flood?

I can only speak for what I know was lost or damaged at Creve Coeur. As far as antiques and classics, a WACO RNF, Rearwin Cloudster, Sh-2 Soviet amphibian, Spartan Executive, and a cub project were damaged but all of these have since been restored or rebuilt. There were a few modern general aviation planes that were damaged or destroyed but only two or three.

On the morning of August 1st 1993, I vividly recall seeing that crane on TV. Sitting on the barge near the County Water plant's intake pipe, I thought for sure it was about to fall into the river. A few minutes after they broadcast that image, they moved down river to show what was left of Creve Coeur. There were only a few hangar roofs visible so we all thought that the airport had been totally washed away.
