Hi to the group,
I've been warmed by the discussion about glossy glass finishes on vintage airplanes: I completely agree to a nicely done, semigloss butyrate dope style finish where one still sees the tapes and waves of the fabric. This is what I want to do on our Waco style Hatz I am building with my son. We both have about the same taste concerning design features(i'm very lucky), however, when we discuss the paint scheme, we have very different opinions: Wheras I stricly want to use 1930's style colors, my son Sam fell in love with the purple/light blue and silver of Rare Aircraft's QCF restorations. I must say, I like them too, they are beautiful and perfectly done, however, I doubt that in the 1930's any metallic color paints like the purple were available. Also, in my opinion, the silver on the wings is too glossy. I would appreciate receiving some thoughts from you experts. You see, we cannot afford a real vintage airplane, so we have to build a smaller biplane with the looks of a real one...
Cheers
Hans, Sitzerland

The original silver on Wacos was in fact very flat. Not shiney at all. The closest Waco came to metal flake was the Gunmetal Grey that they used as a "standard" color from 1936-1939.
