Wow, lots of mods through the years. Would be interesting to see it with that long exhaust again. Ever considered it as a novelty?

When we recover the Waco we plan to take it back to its 1930 configuration.

I forgot to mention that the reason for the long exhaust is that it was owned by Andy Stinis from about 1934-1950 and was used as a skywriter.

If Andy Stinis still had it, circa 1950, was it on the line a Flushing airport, at that time? Would you have any photos of Flushing Airport aircraft about that time? Did "Speed" ever own it? What ever happend to the UPF-7 that Speed's nephew, Johnny was retoring. I remember that , at one point, after years of restoration work, he was relocating the dismantled UPF-7 to another location on the airport, and someone drove a car through the set of newly rebuilt wings! Any idea where it is now? My Dad used to keep a lot of his various aircraft there, from the rare (last factory-built) Emigh Trojan, Lambert Monocoupe, Navion, Swift, and others there, over the years. Speed, of course, having one of those legendary, forceful, eccentric personalities, that was key to Flushing surviving MANY attempts to close it. My Dad also did a bunch of the custom oil tanks( for the smoke on Andy's T-6s,) early on.

I have to assume it was there. Andy Stinis sold the CRG to Pete Brucia who kept it a couple years then sold it to Pess Air Service who wrecked it around 1954, flipping it over and crunching all four wings, center section, tail, cowl and wheelpants. It was bought by the original founder of the National Waco Club, Ray Brandly, around 1959. My father and brothers began rebuilding it for Ray around 1962 and he sold it to them in 1964. It took us 12 years to rebuild it and it has been flying ever since.
Let me do a little asking around about the UPF-7. I have heard that story before about the car driving through the wings.

Small tires for a Waco, to my eyes. Sure looks better in pants.
I see it had a tailskid in the past.
I fly a DH 82A Tiger Moth with a skid and no brakes. Very nice, actually, if you can find grass to work from.

The small tires are left over from the racing days. Another interesting thing is that this is the only open cockpit Waco with ailerons on the lower wings only. Makes the controls very heavy. It also sits higher then any open Waco due to the longer gear and has a different airfoil from any Straightwing. With the tailskid it even appears to sit at a higher angle of attack which was used to Waco's benefit during the Ford Air Tour. One of the events was the stick/unstick contest, i.e. short takeoff/landing. The CRG's won this event hands down. In talking to Art Davis, who flew the other CRG NC660Y in the Tour, the landing portion was when the main gear touched and rolled to a stop. He told us that with all the power and the high angle of attack, they would drag the tailskid until it quit flying and then plop it down and hit the brakes. Landing roll to a stop was under 6 seconds!

Wacoykc asked me about this plane, so I'm finally getting around to posting a couple of pictures. This plane was at the Waco Reunion a couple of weeks ago, and flew for the first time since a lengthy restoration on July 13, 2008. It was lovingly restored by Jim Smith and now has a new owner.
