What is the origin of the letter 'N' prefix in US aircraft registration numbers?

Kind of funny, but a local TV and radio news channel here in Pittsburgh actually kept their original call letters from way back. I think they are the only ones still doing it. They are KDKA.

:?: Don't know what you mean MD. Don't just about all radio and most TV stations still use their KXXX or WXXX call letters?

Hi August,
The "K" prefix is now only issued west of the Mighty Mississippi, "W" prefix east of Big Muddy. The early(original) radio stations were allowed to keep their wrong side of the river call signs.

I'll go with #5 too. Although the one about the snockered bureaucrats is pretty believeable.
