Elusive ID from 1933 National Air Races

Okay, all you air racing buffs..
This photo has been driving me crazy for months. The gent looks so VERY familiar, yet the name still eludes me after hundred hours or more of searching through books, internet, albums etc! This was likely taken at the 1933 National Air Races at Los Angels. It is NOT Tito Falcone, or Bellanca, or Mantz, or? But who the heck is it, please?
