Ford Tri Motor

Tue Oct 22, 2013 1:58 pm

A few weeks ago my wife and I paid a visit to the Henry Ford Museum in Dearborn,Mi. I was admiring the Ford Tri Motor they have on display. A fine looking aircraft. I got to thinking, how many and where are all the Ford Tri Motors at today? I know of the one the EAA has in Oshkosh but my mind draws a blank as to where others call home. Kermit has one I think?

The Kalamazoo Air Zoo's example is with EAA as well. If I remember correctly, EAA is leasing it. It is currently out on tour with EAA's Tri Motor.

The wikipedia entry on this type has a fairly decent survivor list.

Greg Herrick of The Golden Wings Museum just north of the Twin Cities in Minnesota owned two, I think he sold one recently.

The Ford AT-4-B that is on display at the National Museum of Naval Aviation, in Pensacola, was in flying conditon when donated to the museum in 1974. Still looks very good, and is seen by many thousands each year. There are good photos (and lots of Ford Trimotor history) of it on the museum's web pages.

There is a post-war Stout Bushmaster 2000 tri-motor in Chino as well. It is the one that crashed at Fullerton Airport when the gust locks were left in place. They have a new replacement fuselage frame waiting.

Maurice Hovious is restoring several Trimotors in Vicksburg, MI. Not sure how many he has. The last I heard was that around five years ago, he was working on four for various clients.
