HELP !!! New finish over old dope

Mon Aug 12, 2013 6:41 am

Lately I have been thinking about repainting my vintage aircraft.
The fabric is still really good but the dope is starting to show its age
Having recovered many aircraft in dope over the years, I am quite familiar with rejuvenating etc but would like
to know what alternative processes/products people are using.
I am looking for a product that can be applied over old butrayte dope . A product that will keep its flexability and not start cracking as it gets older
What do you guys recommend ???

Thanks

Hi Camm

Check out the thread on our Tiger.
We did some spot repairs. Wet sanded, rejuvenated and then shot another top coat. It turned out pretty good. We are quite happy with the results.

Oh yeah, we did most of it ourselves :D

Hi Andy
Thanks I have been following you thread and agree the Tmoth looks good
I am very very familiar with using dope and at this point have done 29 aircraft but there are many new
products out there that are more robust than dope
Just curious what success people have had

Cam, have you talked to Stan at Grand Valley? He might be tuned in to new products.

I owned a Stinson 108 that was Ceconite and dope. Wet-sanded down the fuselage and wings, sprayed rejuvenator, then painted with Randolph Ranthane. Flew the airplane for eight years and won Best Stinson with it three times at Oshkosh! The polyurethane held up real well with no cracking or any other issues.

It's new, but may not apply to your situation. Has been heavily discussed on Supercub.org.
