I don't understand the concept or what it's purpose is. definitely weird!! I would think an unbalanced prop would cause bad torque.

Why do you say it is unbalanced? It has a metal weight on the side opposite the prop blade.

I'd love to fly behind an Everel prop sometime. Tom, not only are they counterweighted but they have an angled teetering hinge in the hub that allows the prop blade to move forward or back depending on the balance between air load and centrifugal force. Because the hinge is angled this change in tracking also changes pitch making it act a little like a constant speed prop. I believe a similar principle is used in the later, more conventional Aeromatic props.

It is always cutting "clean" air and is therefore more efficient (In theory anyway)

I believe they tested one on an early Bonanza. The name Roby comes to mind as the prop maker, but I may be wrong about that.

I wish I could've gotten some video, it was weird to see it wobble on its hub (when static and moved by hand), but I was really busy and just got a quick snapshot. There are supposed to be two J-2 Cubs with the Everal prop on them at the Lock Haven PA Sentimental Journey fly-in this week. I've heard that the concept was good, balance fine, but that it put a constant asymmetric load on the thrust bearings and wore them out. Seems like the teetering hub would help with that, but you're still only making thrust on one side.

I've heard it said, or seen it printed, numerous times that the biggest reason why single blade props did not catch on was simply one of appearance. Humans like symmetry!
