Old 35mm Kodachrome Slides Recently Scanned.

I've recently scanned about 100 old Kodachrome 35mm slides taken by my dad, R.P. "Dick" Rice in the early 60s. They were mostly taken at Oskaloosa and Ottumwa, Iowa but also several were taken at an Arizona fly-in in late 1961 or early 1962.

I just dropped these onto a webpage. Most lack captions, but I plan on adding them and pertinent info as time permits....but flying and working on my Swift and Cub take precedence so don't get in a hurry.

I thought you folks might be interested in seeing some of these.

I used make the pilgrimage to Blakesburg every year and then Ottumwa after the "split" but it somehow wasn't the same. One day I'll get around to digitizing some of my old classics.

That's Race#14, J.D. Reed's N25Y, in it's "twin to Jay Dee" bronze paint scheme. That airplane had the most beautiful paint schemes in it's first four years as a racer, Mobilgas, Sky Ranger Oil, and the bronze scheme, and all WIX guys can think about is that white CAF paint job. Boring.
The polished finish now is stunning, also.

I can't read the N number, but I think the plane in slide 035 is Richard Bach's Detroit-Parks N499H...subject of his books Biplane and Nothing by Chance.

Great post Jim. It motivates me to get back to scanning some of my old photos and slides. If some of those images were from the early 1960s, many of those planes were about thirty years old when the photos were taken. A 1980 Cessna 172 looks right at home on a general aviation flight line in 2010 and it would be thirty years old also.

I'm looking forward to your next post.

Wow, those are great pictures! Thank you so much for taking the time to scan them and share them with us.

I can't believe the number of spectacular airplanes that were captured in those shots.

I'd love to see someone do a "Where are they now" for each one. I wonder how many of them ended up in barns. Wink, wink.
