I've heard that the customers don't want e re-engined 737. That may be driving their decision making.

I think the 737 NG airplanes were reengined and rewinged. I suspect they would re reengine it and lighten it with more composites in the airframe

Boeing is working on an all new replacement for the Renton football. Errorbust is going to re engine the 318/321 series. At current rates of 35 per month and orders backlogs, the new 37 replacement should be ready in about 14 0r 15 years. I remember when I was building 737-100's in the midd-ish 60's they kept telling us that the market would only support maybe 300 airframes because the DC-9 and BAC 1-11 were already in service-musta been the same guy who told Ford thay should expect to sell about 24000 MUSTANGS total in '64. Marketing dogs-
When they came out with the NG's, they essentially put a scaled down 767 wing under it and corrected all the design goofs accumulated in the 100 thru 600's.

Reading Aviation Week about this is fun, Boeing is goint to try to leapfrog the 318-321NEO (New Engine Option) by being first to come out with an all new plane.
It said Boeing recently queried its best 737 customers and, universally, they wanted an all-new plane rather than just sticking new engines on the current new generation 737s.
