Hughes Flying Boat poster??

Hi gang,

Trying to locate a poster sized print of this image of the Hughes Flying Boat. Any ideas??

Take a really good copy of that picture to any photo enlarging camera shop and they should be able to do the job, the only issue is cost, don't take it to the 'MEGADRUGSTORE Co.' photo counter, they farm all processing out and don't really care beyond 'did it print?' as far as quality whereas the folks @ the local photo/ camera shop will take the time to make sure you are satisfied. A really cool sized one for the wall will be a bit spendy and if you want to wallpaper the front room check with your banks loan department first.
The big cost will be when you go to have it properly framed--big sucking sound followed by a sqeeky 'how much!?!'
That should be a neat addition to the wallspace in your digs!

The photo is uncredited in the first couple of references I've checked.

For a decent original origin copy, I suggest you do a bit of searching through the major photo news agencies such as Getty, or from the other end find a credit and track forward as to the current rights holder to the original.

Another (obvious?) route would be to talk to the Evergreen guys, who will have copies in their files.

You may be able to obtain reasonably priced copies for your own use through these routes, either a reasonable interim print size or even the poster size you want - it would be worth getting a theoretical costing from your preferred lab to act as a benchmark first.

If you want it for public display or publication it'll cost a bomb, of course.

Thanks everyone,

I've checked with the Evergreen Museum on a couple visits and gotten comments about it being copyrighted by a magazine and they won't allow reproductions to be sold at the museum. I just think it's a beautiful image and want to hang it in my hangar.

Hmmm. Without checking I don't know, but it's probable the shot was taken by a press photographer and that image (are there similar? I'm not sure it's unique) will belong to the agency - not 'a magazine' unless it's Time/Life. They'd probably be delighted to sell a copy to you for money. Given the status of the shot it's unlikely to be lost in their archives.

Much Gras!!!! There's a good image of the Racer there! (I wonder if there's any images of the Racer in flight?)

Here's an image of me sitting in the cockpit. Everyone kept going "Grab the controls like you're flying!" and I was like "Uh uh, that's where Mr. Hughes sat!!!"



People keep remembering him as the old crazy guy or for the over the top version of him in The Aviator, but I respect him for being an incredible innovator in so many fields, and a hell of a pilot in his younger days.

He was certainly one of the greats of his era, few airmen could match his achievements, particularly the breadth from concept to record.
