Hamilton metalplane to be sold at auction

The sole remaining airworthy Hamilton Monoplane has been consigned to the upcoming Barrett-Jackson collector car auction. It wil be seen on the Speed Channel coverage of the event for those of us who won't be there in person.

Last year the firm sold a Ford Tri-Motor for more than $1 million. IIRC, it was sold to a Phoenix area builder and car collector who is famous for buying the high value lots at B-J's event. He doesn't have his car collection open to the public, so I don't know if the Ford has been...or will be...seen much in public again.
Just from past history, I'd guess he's probably their top sales prospect.

Yes, the Tri-Motor was sold to Ron Pratt last year along with the Odegaard F2G Corsair "Race 57" and both are kept at Pratt's facility at Stellar Air Park in Chandler, AZ - not more that three miles from me. Unfortunately, unless anyone else knows otherwise, I don't think either airplane has seen much light of day since they were flown in... though I know there are a few here on the forum who are far more qualified to agree or disagree with that statement as they spend more time on site at Stellar than I do.

Wow, I flew from there with a friend back in 1976 and there wasn'tt much there except the homes with hangars. There sure wasn't anything large enough to hold a Tri-Motor and Corsair.
Last time I was there I went through the Rotorway factory at the North end of the area.

Yeah, it's grown up a lot in recent years... the fly-in community is still on the West side, but his hangar (as well as some other commercial buildings) is on the East side. The runway was rebuilt and widened this past year... would you believe that Pratt also flies a Citation Sovereign from the airport as well?!

I heard from a news program that 90% of the Phoenix metro area has been built since 1960... so any visions that are more than 10 years old are considered expired

Word I heard is that the new home for the Metalplane is Fantasy of Flight. It went for $671,000 including buyers premium.

The one-of-a-kind Hamilton H-47 Metalplane we featured in last month's Vintage Aircraft Online was sold the evening of January 23, 2010,
during the Barrett-Jackson auction in Scottsdale, Arizona. The winning bid of $610,000 was made via phone. The final price that was posted, after a 10 percent buyer's premium was tacked on, came to $671,000. The winning bid was placed by Mr. Howard Wright III, a Seattle, Washington based businessman and philanthropist. Mr. Wright is a past trustee of the Museum of Flight. He also recently purchased a Travel Air 6000 (N9084) on floats, owned for many years by Bill Decreeft.
