Howard 500

Wed Oct 03, 2007 10:21 am

How much of Howard 500 exist even today?

Wed Oct 03, 2007 10:56 am

Just one right now. However, the FAA shows that at least 3 more were registered at least recently, including another by the guys who own the airworthy one.

The biggest problems right now are brakes. All of the brake pucks for the Howard 500 brake assembly have been bought up by the firebomber operators (it uses P2V Neptune wheels and brakes), although with the Neptunes being retired at least in the states, the situation may have improved.

in a recent French article they spoke about three planes who fly
- one with Phillippi Corp.
- one with Dunkan Bake in UK who fly one or two times in a year
- one wreck (but where?)
and maybe an other one here: http://warbirdinformationexchange.org/p ... hp?t=16244

Good question isn't it?

(thanks for the link)

Looks like a C-60 Lodestar to me...of course, Lodestars didn't come with R2800s either...

Phillippi actually has 2 Howard 500s, N500HP which is flying, and N134U. 134U appears to be externally complete(control surfaces have been removed, though), and I've heard conflicting stories as to weather it is to be used as a parts source for N500HP, or restored as another flyer.

The aircraft from the other thread certainly looks like a Howard 500 to my eyes.

OK, but there's no photo of the N134U? I don't saw that on the web...

Dan:

Is Phillippi the guy who has a Howard in Anoka? The one I am talking about, had bare metal, and green and yellow paint scheme, and according to what I was told back in 2000, it used to belong to one Elvis Presley...

I remember what I think was a Howard 500, that sat at the airport in Watsonville, California for a long time. The last time I was there was '01 or '02. I don't remember if it was still there or not. Does anyone know anything?

Yes, Phillippi has the Howards at Anoka. The last time I saw the second Howard(N137U), it was mostly bare metal, there were only a few bits and pieces of the old paint scheme left.

I'll try to find some photos of N137U to post in the next couple of days, I know I have some both before and after the paint was stripped.

Not quite sure where I pulled N134U from  The aircraft I was refering to is actually N137U... Sorry for any confusion.

Dan,

Thank you for the photos!

It is not though, as you have pointed out, the same airplane. I wish I could remember the name or nickname of the guy who lives in that hangar (Frenchy?) who was so kind as to show us around; Jim Harker was there, too, and we had a nice conversation about his B-25 and the "Elvis' " Howard.

Here's some pictures I have of N721N at Ft. Worth in 1978...
This craft was lost some 1200 miles from Aruba....

Quick scan on the Zerox machine, but here is N721N as it was being delivered from the factory.
