Now that I have no 1/1 scale warbirds to work on I've gotten back to building some of the stored inventory in my shed. Here are three aircraft I've finished in the last few months, mostly thanks to Mgawa and the other members of his forum, http://www.letletlet-warplanes.com/forum/index.php .

This is a Tamiya 1/72 kit that absolutely falls together. The model depicts a trainer stationed at Bruning Army Air Field with the 262nd Fighter Pilot Training School in the summer of '44.

This 8th Attack Squadron A-24 is from an Accurate Miniatures 1/48th SBD. I still need to weather it a bit so it's not quite done yet. Thanks to Hemiman for photos and research on this one.

Finally, an early Il 2 (also an AM kit) that was rebuilt from two damaged aircraft by the Royal Hungarian Air Force and tested for a time.

Nice work, and I like the fact you went 'out of the main stream' on all three builds they are all eye catchers!

Nice work, Scott. I agree with The Inspector. Always great to see something a bit different.

Thanks, y'all. I'd not finished a model in over ten years so it felt good to get that little P-47 finished.

Speaking of "out of the mainstream" here is a future project that Mgawa sent me a couple of weeks ago:

I've always wanted to build a Gannet and this will be lots of fun. 8) Thanks for shipping it over, Srecko! My plan is to build the little beauty in Australian markings.

Incidentally, the Il 2 camouflage scheme is a bit of an extrapolation. All I had to work with for references was a Wings Palette line drawing and information from a forum that mentioned the repaint by the Hungarian crew. I used a common camo pattern and colors employed by the RHAF. It is very likely not accurate but will have to do until I ever find a better photo. Just don't take it as gospel that my scheme is historically accurate.

Forget about the 'historically accurate' as well even the serious historians fail in their info. Most important that you enjoy in build as well we all who watching you and work alongside with you. Whatever you do with Gannet, this will be perfect :) And in few days we start Corsair group build on our forum and this will be great show for our eye's :)

Cheers :)

:D, Great effort there Second Air Force. I know how it is to be a slow builder, I am too. Keep up the good work and I hope to be able to finish my Aero L-39 soon. That will be the first since January 1st last year, the Polikarpov I-5.

Cheers,
Ross.

Here is KD164, the fourth Corsair IV. She was assigned to 1850 Squadron and operated from HMS Vengeance. The model depicts how the airplane looked during the spring of '45.

I rebuilt this from an Otaki kit I'd built for Ellen when we were dating in 1980. The roundels and fin flash are from the original Otaki kit decals and all I did was give them a gentle coat of clear before cutting them out. I was amazed at how pliable they were after over thirty years in storage. Here's a link to the build: http://www.letletlet-warplanes.com/foru ... u-corsair/

Incidentally, here is a shameless plug for the e-magazine that Mgawa and other contributors have designed and published: http://secure.plimus.com/jsp/dev_store1 ... rId=923636

My uncle, a submariner (USS Scabbardfish), picked up a RNZAF pilot that ditched a clip-wing Corsair. The pilot would have given anything to have flown against a FW190 in one of those clip-wing Corsairs. The pilot said it was a heck of a dogfighter.

Hi b29flteng,

I am wondering id the kiwi pilot your father's submarine picked up might have been Lt (A) Derek Morten of the Royal New Zealand Navy Volunteer Reserve. I have met Derek, he flew a Corsair in the Royal Navy Fleet Air Arm attacks against the Tirpitz, and later was assigned to the British Pacific Fleet where he was flying attacks against the Japanese. On the 10th of August 1945 he was on a raid on mainland Japan when his Corsair was hit badly. He headed out to sea with his wingman and eventually ditched into the ocean. His wingman circled and radioed the position and after a while had to disappear. He was in his raft for some time wondering what was going to happen when a US Navy submarine popped up right beside him and took him aboard. He spent the rest of the war (but a few days) onboard and got to know the crew very well.

He was RNZNVR flying a Royal Navy clipped wing Corsair. The RNZAF never had clipped wing versions and were never that close to Japan.

Derek lives in Christchurch still today I believe, and was very fit and well when I saw him in July 2010, though that was pre-earthquakes of course. If you or your uncle wanted to get in touch with him I could provide his details.
