Warbird Information Exchange

Have any of you used them? I am going to use them on the visible B-17, and wondered how difficult they are.

I've used many different photo etched sets in the past. It helps to have a set of Micro Pliers to help bend the parts into the proper shape and a set of tweezers to help hold the parts while you glue them into place. You'll also have to use super glue to attach them. I like the gap filling type because it won't run all over the place. You can use a super glue "kicker" to set the glue up so you don't have to hold the part.

You also have to be very careful when you cut the part from the tree because the loose parts have a tendency to fly across the room never to be seen again.

Eduard also offers various color photo etched sets for the B-17 that I'm thinking of using the next time I build a B-17.

The color sets makes things so much easier.

Watch the kind of glue you use for the clear half of the B-17, you don't want it show. Or you can do what a lot of guys do is glue up normal but paint part way over on the clear (1/4 inch or so) to hide that seem.

While I find it a major pain to work with, photo-etch (or PE) is the best way to render some parts, especially instrument panels and seatbelts. The best way to cut the stuff is to use a curved-edge X-acto blade, and "roll" it across the attachment points. It can also be helpful to stick the fret (that's the complete parts set) to double-sided tape before cutting, to avoid losing parts to the dreaded Carpet Monster.

There are several different companies that make clamps that help you fold parts straight and crisp. "Hold & Fold" and "Etch Mate" come to mind. If you're going to be bending a lot of parts, it might not be a bad investment.

One suggestion for the clear fuselage side. You might just want to mask off certain sections to leave clear, since there's nothting to see underneath the cockpit, nose compartment, or radio room (unless of course you plan on scratchbuilding those areas!)
